Who Was Dr. Maria Montessori?
Born in 1870 into an Italian family, Dr. Maria Montessori was the first woman in Italian history to become a physician. Her experiences in medicine and interest in anthropology, philosophy, and psychiatry led her to a life devoted to the education of children and parents. Through her work with children, she determined that the most important learning tool was a healthy learning environment. At the time of her death in 1951, she was one of the most honored and respected educators in the world.
